Bui Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (September 14, 2006) Publication Date: 2006-09-14 Number Of Pages: 375 Today, Fracture Mechanics is a well known topic within the scientific community. Applications of Fracture Mechanics can be found in various fields ranging from solid mechanics and structures to materials sciences and computational mechanics. However, most of these results apply only to linear fracture mechanics of two-dimensional and homogeneous isotropic solids. Therefore there are still incompletely solved problems; such as non-linearity, frictional contact cracks, residual stresses in fracture mechanics, three-dimensional crack geometry, coupled cracked solid/fluid, etc. Recently, new topics related to crack detection based on different physical phenomena have appeared. This book is an attempt to present, in a unified manner, different topics of Continuum and Fracture Mechanics: energy methods, conservation laws, mathematical methods to solve two-dimensional and three-dimensional crack problems. Moreover, a series of new subjects is presented in a straightforward manner, accessible to under-graduate students. These new topics take into consideration the thermodynamics of continuous media, including thermal and dynamical aspects. In addition, the book introduces the notion of duality or symmetry in Solids Mechanics. The loss of symmetry is exploited to provide a unique and powerful tool, called the reciprocity gap functional introduced by the author’s groups, to solve explicitly some important inverse problems arising in crack determination as well as in the earthquake inverse problem. With its emphasis, initially on physical or experimental back-grounds, and then on analysis and theoretical results, rather than on numerical computations, this monograph is intended to be used by students and researchers in solids mechanics, mechanical engineering and applied mathematics ~ ISBN: 0471815187 Title: Statistical Mechanics Author: Kerson Huang Publisher: Wiley Publication Date: 1987-04 Number Of Pages: 512 Product Details * Hardcover: 508 pages * Publisher: John Wiley & Sons; 2 edition (April 29, 1987) * Language: English * ISBN-10: 0471815187 * ISBN-13: 978-0471815181 From the Publisher Unlike most other texts on the subject, this clear, concise introduction to the theory of microscopic bodies treats the modern theory of critical phenomena. Wohlmuth (Editor) Publisher: Springer; 1 edition (October 9, 2006) Publication Date: 2006-10-09 Number Of Pages: 571 Understanding the interaction between various processes is a pre-requisite for solving problems in natural and engineering sciences. Many phenomena can not be described by concentrating on them in isolation - therefore multifield models and concepts that include various kinds of field problems and processes are needed. This book summarizes the main scientific results of the Collaborative Research Center on Multifield Problems in Continuum Mechanics (Sonderforschungsbereich Mehrfeldprobleme in der Kontinuumsmechanik, SFB 404) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 1995-2006. The book is divided into three main sections: A: Volume-Coupled Problems, devoted to fields which are coupled inside the processing domain or volume, B: Boundary-Coupled Problems, here physical fields and processes are coupled via domain boundaries, C: Fundamental Methods, search into the mathematical concepts and backgrounds of multifield and multiscale modeling ~ ISBN: 3540239510 Title: Modern Control Theory Author: Zdzislaw Bubnicki Publisher: Springer ; 1 edition (July 26, 2005) Publication Date: 2005-07-26 Number Of Pages: 423 This compact and uniform textbook presents the contemporary state of the art of control theory and its applications. He laid the fundamentals for the theory of solids and has been called the "father of solid-state physics." His numerous, valuable contributions include the theory of magnetism, measurement of the magnetic moment of the neutron, nuclear magnetic resonance, and the infrared problem in quantum electrodynamics. Statistical mechanics is a crucial subject which explores the understanding of the physical behaviour of many-body systems that create the world around us. Bloch's first-year graduate course at Stanford University was the highlight for several generations of students. Upon his retirement, he worked on a book based on the course. Unfortunately, at the time of his death, the writing was incomplete. This book has been prepared by Professor John Dirk Walecka from Bloch's unfinished masterpiece. It also includes three sets of Bloch's handwritten lecture notes (dating from 1949, 1969 and 1976), and details of lecture notes taken in 1976 by Brian Serot, who gave an invaluable opinion of the course from a student's perspective. All of Bloch's problem sets, some dating back to 1933, have been included. The book is accessible to anyone in the physical sciences at the advanced undergraduate level or the first-year graduate level ~ ISBN: 0471551570 Title: Advanced Mechanics of Materials Author: Arthur P. Boresi Richard J. Schmidt Omar M. Sidebottom Publisher: John Wiley & Sons Publication Date: 1993-01 Number Of Pages: 832 Updated and reorganized, each of the topics is thoroughly developed from fundamental principles. The assumptions, applicability and limitations of the methods are cleary discussed. Includes such advanced subjects as plasticity, creep, fracture, mechanics, flat plates, high cycle fatigue, contact stresses and finite elements. Due to the widespread use of the metric system, SI units are used throughout. Contains a generous selection of illustrative examples and problems ~ ISBN: 048660361X Title: Thermodynamics Author: Enrico Fermi Publisher: Dover Publications Publication Date: 1956-06-01 Number Of Pages: 160 These lectures by Enrico Fermi make great reading for undergraduates in chemistry or physics, particularly those undergoing the rigors of physical chemistry and chemical thermodynamics. Fermi writes with clarity, always carefully laying the appropriate groundwork for each topic. The mathematics assumes familiarity with calculus, including partial differentiation. Fermi provides clear explanations and motivation for the mathematics and the derivations are complete and easy to follow. For example, he carefully explained the form of a perfect differential of two variables and how it can be more readily integrated. I appreciated this help. The first four chapters will be familiar to students of physics: Thermodynamic Systems, First Law of Thermodynamics, Second Law of Thermodynamics, and Entropy. The derivation of the Clapeyron equation and the Van der Waals equation may be new to some students. Thereafter, the text begins to look more like physical chemistry with chapters titled Thermodynamic Potentials, Gaseous Reactions, Thermodynamics of Dilute Solutions, and the Entropy Constant. I found these last chapters to be more difficult, but not overly so. At some points Thermodynamics becomes a real page-turner, but not in the sense of a fast-paced action story. The page-turning is necessary to retrieve earlier mathematical expressions. Occasionally, you will encounter statements like "the expression for the free energy is immediately obtained from equations (111), (29), and (86)." Fermi does not allow the reader to forget earlier derivations and discussions. If your familiarity with thermodynamics is limited (or now foggy due to the passage of years), I suggest first reading Understanding Thermodynamics by H. C. Van Ness. This 100-page book, a series of lectures, is an excellent introduction to thermodynamics from an engineering and physics perspective. It corresponds to the first four chapters of Fermi's text. ~ ISBN: 0824723058 Title: Microengineering, MEMS, and Interfacing (Mechanical Engineering) Author: Danny Banks Publisher: CRC Publication Date: 2006-03-23 Number Of Pages: 352 Designed to address particular problems across a range of disciplines, Microengineering, MEMS, and Interfacing: A Practical Guide provides a general overview of micromachining techniques and presents micromachining approaches to problem solving. He also includes discussions on nanotechnology and how it overlaps with microengineering, introduces the subject of sensor interfacing, and raises the tricky subject of MEMS packaging ~ ISBN: 3540238492 Title: Plastics for Corrosion Inhibition (Springer Series in Materials Science) Author: V.A.
