The intent of this Guide is to give the materials community a resource for identifying standard methods which are used to measure surface
properties and to characterize surface engineered materials. Preface Surface engineering of materials is important in applications as
diverse as medical implants and gas turbines. Historically, a coating or cladding was added to a surface, or a surface was treated, to
enhance properties or performance. However, increasingly, heat treated, implanted, coated and clad surfaces are viewed as part of a
materials system where the substrate and surface complement each other in achieving a performance goal for a component. The
integration of the surface and substrate as an engineered system creates a situation where failure of the surface may, in effect, be failure of
the system and thus characterization of surfaces and measurement of surface properties are important to the design, maintenance, and
analysis of the whole system.
The advantages of engineered surfaces have stimulated development of surface treatment and coating processes as well as materials
and, consequently, commerce. Commerce in engineered materials depends upon the ability to specify and measure composition,
microstructure, dimensions and properties as well as performance in applications of interest. The intent of this Guide is to give the
materials community a resource for identifying standard methods which are used to measure surface properties and to characterize
surface engineered materials.

been updated to take into account planetary missions that have flown
throughout the solar system since the first edition. Both editions are out-
growths of various short courses in Planetary Geology that have been held
over the last two decades, and from activities developed in the classroom.
Activities in Planetary Geology was developed for the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration with the guidance, support, and cooperation of
many individuals and groups. This educator's guide features exercises grouped into five units: 1) introduction to geologic processes, 2)
impact cratering activities, 3) planetary atmosphere, 4) planetary surfaces and 5) geologic mapping

Ceramic Technology and Processing (Materials and Processing Technology)
By Alan G. King
* Publisher: Noyes Publications
* Number Of Pages: 450
* Publication Date: 2002-01-15
* ISBN / ASIN: 0815514433
Book Description:
Perfect for the new technician or engineer entering the ceramics industry as well as for the "old hand" who needs an update on some
aspect of ceramics processing, this resource provides practical laboratory-oriented answers to such typical processing problems as
particle segregation, agglomeration, contamination, pressure gradients, adherence to tooling, and temperature gradients during drying
and firing.
The author examines the difficulties of practical testing and processing in the ceramic laboratory, such as vast differences in scale and
equipment, and shows how to evaluate results taking such variables into account. Once the laboratory work is satisfactorily completed, the
rest of the book explores serious issues involved in transferring technology from the lab bench to the plant floor and then to the customer.
The author gives advice on dealing with real-life problems such as allocating human and capital resources and overcoming customer
wariness of being first to try new procedures and processes.
Each section contains practical, hands-on suggestions on performing and sometimes avoiding certain tasks, bringing to the reader key
information that is at best sparsely available in the industry. As the author states, "Laboratory skills are gained by hands-on experience. The
intent of this book is to accelerate the process."
Key Features:
- Packed with drawings and photographs that illustrate the equipment and the accompanying procedures. - The author has actual
experience with the equipment used in the procedures - Highly practical book, based on the author's substantial experience, showing
specifically how the ceramic processes work - especially use-ful for those just entering the field or for someone encountering a new
ceramic processing issue for the first time - Contains detailed laboratory procedures in each chapter, something rarely included in most
technical literature
